The revolt, consolidating several tribal uprisings which had begun in 1966, was inspired by the First Iraqi-Kurdish War in neighboring Iraq and enjoyed the support of the recovering Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran, previously crushed during the 1946 Iran crisis.
