She was commissioned in 1888. The Kornilov was 113 meters long and 14.8 meters wide, had a draught of 7.8 meters and featured a large ram bow. She displaced 5,863 tons. The armament consisted of 14 x 6-inch (152 mm) guns, 6 x 3-pounders (47 mm) and 10 x 1-pounders (37 mm) plus six 15-inch (380 mm) torpedo tubes. Two horizontal triple-expansion steam engines with eight boilers gave her 5,977 ihp and a top speed of 17.6 knots (32.6 km/h). She had two shafts and a bunker capacity of 1.000 tons of coal. The crew numbered 479 men.The Admiral Kornilov was unique to the Russian Navy but resembled the large protected cruisers Tage and Amiral Cecelle built at the same time for the French Navy.
