It is the fourteenth novel in the internationally popular Inspector Montalbano series.Inspector Montalbano has a dream in between the tragic and the ridiculous, but it reveals how the two fixed thoughts he has had in recent years also accompany him in his sleep: the idea of death and his relationship with Livia.In the dream, he's looking at his own funeral taking place and Catarella himself tells him that he's dead, a communication which is commonly entrusted to him whenever there are dead bodies to announce to the Inspector. Attending the funeral are the usual supporting team of police investigators: Coroner Dr. Pasquano, who grumpily refuses to give details on the deceased before the autopsy, Questor Bonetti-Alderighi, who does not authorize Montalbano to investigate his own death, his friend Mimì Augello. They are all there, except for the person who should be there in the first place: Livia, his girlfriend. An irritated Montalbano calls her on the telephone and she calmly tells him that most probably she won't have time to attend the funeral and that, to say it plainly, she will in fact seize this unique opportunity, his death, to feel free from an overlong relationship and look for pastures new.A loud noise wakes Montalbano, caused by the stormy sea and lapping up to the balcony of his house. The sea and the port of Vigata now become the main background of Montalbano's new investigation, involving two vessels moored side by side at the Vigata docks: a powerful speedboat and the "Vanna", a luxury yacht whose crew has found a dinghy into the sea carrying a disfigured man killed by poison.Montalbano suspects foulplay involving some of the vessels' crews and asks the collaboration of a female officer of the Port Authorities: enter then Laura, a beautiful and intelligent young woman who will fall desperately in love with the Inspector, who will in turn and simultaneously lose his heart to her, just like a passionate teenager struck by the classic lightning.Action and introspection alternate in this 14th novel, which sees Montalbano wrestling with doubts and existential thoughts whilst trying to resolve a complicated case of diamond trafficking.. }
