Originally privately owned and founded by a group of chemists and other scientists, it opened on June 12, 1965. Ownership was transferred to a non-profit foundation, the Sea Research Foundation, in 1977, and then to the Niagara Aquarium Foundation in 1994. The aquarium's stated mission is "to broaden the public’s awareness of aquatic ecosystems through innovative and stimulating exhibits, displays, and educational and recreational programs that promote conservation and support research."Animals on display at the aquarium include Humboldt penguins, California sea lions, harbor seals, sharks, freshwater turtles, sturgeon, sea horses, and other freshwater and saltwater fish. There is also a tidal pool exhibit. The building houses over 1,500 aquatic animals. The aquarium is located in a circular building approximately 200 meters from the Niagara River. A mural on the exterior by Wyland, the "Whaling Wall", depicts marine life.The Aquarium of Niagara hosts sleepovers for scout and school groups, as well as birthday parties.
