The three story brick building was built in 1877-78, and is an excellent example of Second Empire design, although its architect is unknown. The exterior is little changed from its original construction, although the interior has been subjected to period modernizations.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The school was closed in 1990, and the town voted to demolish it in 2000. A community effort rescued the building from that fate, and it is slated to be rehabilitated for use by community organizations.. }
