It housed the langue of France (except Auvergne and Provence which were separate langues) until the French occupation of Malta in 1798.This was the second Auberge de France to be built. The first one was situated in South Street and was constructed in 1570. This was deemed too small and a new Auberge was built one block away in 1588. Both Auberges were designed by Girolamo Cassar, but the second Auberge had some different architectural features to Cassar's usual style as he had to integrate another building into the new Auberge.Auberge de France was hit by a bomb on 8 April 1942 and it was completely destroyed. The ruins were cleared after the war and the Workers' Memorial Building was erected in its place in the 1960s.
