The title was first created under the Suffragan Bishops Act 1534 and takes its name after Taunton, the county town of Somerset.The current bishop is the Right Revd Peter Maurice. He was vicar of All Saints' Tooting for seven years before his appointment as an archdeacon. He is a graduate of St Chad's Durham and studied for ordination at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield. He was ordained deacon in 1972 and priest in 1976.
