The division was created in 1949 and is named for Caroline Chisholm, a social worker and promoter of women's immigration. It is located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and includes the suburbs of Box Hill, Burwood, Mount Waverley, Ashwood, Chadstone, and parts of Oakleigh and Clayton. Until the 1980s it was a safe Liberal seat based on Camberwell, but since then boundary changes have moved it south-east, taking in more Labor-voting suburbs and making the seat marginal.
