The clinic was first launched in 1970 on Floyd Avenue at the Emerson House of the First Unitarian Church, and was later relocated several times before moving to their current location on Thompson Street. It is considered to be an early example of free clinics, and one of the oldest of its kind in Virginia. In 2002 the clinic was officially designated by the Virginia Senate as a charitable organization. The Fan Free Clinic operates with both paid employees and unpaid volunteers, and clients of the clinic must undergo a financial screening to determine their eligibility.The Fan Free Clinic operates in four separate areas and each offers different services.
