Prior to coaching for the French Football Federation, he had domestic coaching tenures at USL Dunkerque, En Avant de Guingamp, and AS Nancy. In the 2010–11 season, Smericki coached the under-19 team to victory at the 2010 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship and led the under-20 team to a fourth place finish at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
