This system started its operation on December 6, 1992.Narita International Airport, the international airport of the Greater Tokyo Area, opened the current Terminal 2 in 1992, as well as the shuttle system. The shuttle links the main building of the terminal and its satellite, 279 m away. The whole ride takes a minute, and is free of charge.The system is made by Nippon Otis Elevator, a company specialized in elevators and escalators. It is technically (and legally) not a railway, but a horizontal elevator; cars are attached to a cable that moves them, like a funicular. These cars do not have wheels; instead, they float on a 0.2-millimetre layer of pressured air. This was the first use of such a system to be used in an airport, as well as the first in Japan.A new walkway between the main and satellite buildings will open on September 27, 2013, following which the people mover will cease operations.. }
