General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo built it in 1851-1852 next to a free-flowing spring and its pool, which had been named Chiucuyem (crying mountain) by the natives and which Vallejo renamed to the rough Latin equivalent Lachryma Montis (mountain tear).
