She was commissioned at Key West, Florida, on 5 October 1917 as USS Anton Dohrn (SP-1086).Assigned to the 7th Naval District and based at St. Augustine, Florida, Anton Dohrn served on patrol duty along the northeastern coast of Florida through the end of World War I.
