She was commissioned at New York City as USS Natoya (SP-391) on either 11 June 1917 or 19 June 1917.Natoya served on patrol duties in New York Harbor. She was decommissioned on 11 January 1918 to undergo repairs. After their completion, she was recommissioned on 18 May 1918 and resumed her patrol duties for the remainder of World War I.Natoya was decommissioned for the second and last time on 18 December 1918.
