In 1994 the Merriespruit tailings dam disaster occurred just outside of Virginia, killing seventeen people.On the 5 December 2000, Virginia was incorporated into the Matjhabeng Local Municipality along with the city of Welkom and the towns of Allanridge, Hennenman, Odendaalsrus and Ventersburg.
