It was built ca.1890, and is a two and a half story, frame octagon building. It sits on a coursed stone faced foundation and features a prominent arched opening at the main entrance. As a company store, it remained in operation until August 1954, the New River Company Whipple mine closed in 1957. It was sold to Madge Cummings from the New River Company and she opened Madge's Trading post. The over sized building served the community offering various retail services. It was again sold in 1992 to Dr. Richard Hunt and went through some minor renovations to make way for his dinner theater and small bed and breakfast. The restaurant and small plays were successful for a short time by the early 2000 funding seemed to be a factor and the building was in serious need of preservation. It was advertised for sale and in 2006 was purchased by Charles,Joy Lynn and family to restore and preserve the historic icon. Currently today the Justus Collins original is the only building in this architectural design that exists. It houses the Appalachian Heritage Museum and offers daily tours throughout its 18,000 sq.ft structure from May 1st to Nov. 1st. Located in the center just 10 short miles from the historic New River Gorge Bridge another piece of structural art in Fayette county,and 10 miles from the largest Boyscout Adventure center,The Summit.
