Premier William Davis appointed Newman to two significant Cabinet posts, Minister of Environment (Feb. 26, 1974 - Oct. 7, 1975) and then Minister of Agriculture and Food (Oct.7, 1975 - Aug. 30, 1979]. In his capacity as Minister of Agriculture and Food, Newman was responsible for the creation of the Foodland Ontario program, which continues to today, designed to promote the sale of Ontario-grown agricultural products.He resigned from Cabinet in 1979 and from the Legislature in 1981.A supporter of a wide range of community groups, Newman had a particularly strong association with the Ajax-Pickering Hospital and St. Paul's Church-On-The-Hill, Dunbarton.Bill Newman died October 12, 1988 in Ajax-Pickering Hospital following an illness of almost two years.
