- Amrut_(whisky) abstract "Amrut is a brand of Indian single malt whisky, manufactured by Amrut Distilleries, and launched on 24 August 2004 in Glasgow, Scotland. It is the first single malt whisky to be made in India. Amrut (अमृत) or amrita is a Sanskrit word which can be translated as "nectar of the gods", "nectar of life", or "drink of the gods". The company translates it as "Elixir of Life". The brand became famous after whisky connoisseur Jim Murray gave it a rating of 82 on a scale of 1–100 in 2005, and again in 2010, when Murray declared Amrut Fusion single malt whisky as the world's third-best whisky in that year's edition of his annual Whisky Bible. John Hansell, editor of American magazine Whisky Advocate, wrote that "India's Amrut distillery changed the way many think of Indian whisky – that it was just cheap Scotch whisky blended with who knows what and sold as Indian whisky. Amrut is making whisky, and it's very good".Amrut was the only Indian single malt to be featured in London department store Harrods' "Whiskies around the World" section. It went on sale at Harrods in October 2011 and is currently the only Indian liquor brand to ever retail at the store. Amrut Distilleries currently sells Amrut single malt whisky in 22 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States.".
