- Bath_People's_Assembly abstract "Bath People's Assembly is a forum in Bath, describing itself as an "independent democratic non-affiliated body for discussion, debate and the formulation of ideas and proposals on local, national and global issues and policies." Its purpose is to give all people of Bath a stronger democratic voice. It invites people of all ages, genders, abilities, races and religions to come and work together to put democracy into action. The Bath People's Assembly was initially set up by campaigners from the Occupy Bath encampment with the aim of continuing to raise awareness and providing a democratic forum for Bath, however the forum is not specifically for those involved the Occupy Movement and is non-partisan and non-politically aligned The first meeting was held on 2 December 2011 with a turnout of over 50 people. Issues discussed included local housing and the war in Afghanistan. A second meeting was organised for 15 December. The forum currently meets bi-monthly in the Friends' Meeting House in Bath. This was one of the earliest examples of the Occupy Movement utilising Friends' Meeting Houses since the Quakers declared their support for the movement on 17 November 2011 The meetings are conducted by consensus decision making, a form of direct democracy. Working groups are often formed to deal with single issues, such as local library cuts or specific events, and broader topics such as Tax, International Relations and Housing. In February 2012, the Bath People's Assembly launched a petition to Bath and North East Somerset Council calling for them to switch their bank account from NatWest to an ethical bank, as part of the wider Move Your Money campaign. As of 24 February 2012, the petition had 62 signatures, more than the 50 signatures required for a petition to the council and the first petition on their website to reach this threshold. On 28 April 2012, Bath people's Assembly put on the "Visions for Change" event. Twenty-three campaigns and organisations active in the Bath area attended for an afternoon of talks and discussions about the issues surrounding their campaigns.".
