- Court_of_Wards_(India) abstract "The Court of Wards was a legal body created by the East India Company on a model similar to the Court of Wards and Liveries that had existed in England from 1540 to 1660. Its purpose was to protect heirs and their estates in situations where the heir was deemed not to be an adult and therefore incapable of acting in their own right. Estates would be managed on behalf of the heir, who would also be educated and nurtured through the offices of the Court in order to ensure that they gained the necessary skills to manage their inheritance independently. Control of the estates would in normal circumstances return to the heir when adulthood was attained.Rulers in India had some informal provisions for the physical protection of their child heirs prior to the European colonisation of India, as exemplified by Humayun leaving his young son safely in the care of Askari even though the two adult brothers had an acrimonious relationship. The utility of creating a Court of Wards in the country was recognised by Philip Francis, a member of the Bengal Council as early as 1773 and the institution was established in the Presidency of Bengal by the Governor-General of India, John Shore, in August 1797. It had powers of oversight regarding the finances and heirs to an estate in the event that the estate owner was incapacitated. Those powers extended as far as allowing the Court to choose alternate heirs, dissolve successions and directly control estates, including such control as was necessary over lands and revenue in order to protect the interests of the British administration. Similar institutions were later established in other EIC-controlled areas - Assam, Bombay Presidency, the Central Provinces, Northwest Frontier Province, Orissa, the Punjab, Sindh and the United Provinces - and were emulated by rulers such as the raja of the Gadwal samasthan. Less similar was the body created to serve the autocratic Nizam of Hyderabad.".
