But, worse is the fact that he finds they have had an almost miraculous effect on him. His bald patch is growing over, and he can think much faster and more clearly than in years. The pies, it seems, are healing his body from the inside out.Unable to concentrate on anything else, Kaine coaxes the despot’s henchmen to send him a delivery of the delicacies. And, as he becomes increasingly paranoid, he begins to order eyes from eye banks for the purposes of research. Fresh eyes, he discovers, are far more delicious than the cooked ones. No eye bank dares refuse the request, after all they are being asked by the greatest eye surgeon in the world.As the story continues, Kaine finds that green eyes have certain properties not found in other eyes. Not only are they more delicious, but they have the ability to speed his thought processes. The only downside is that the more eyes one eats, the shorter their efficacy.At the same time that the doctor is gorging himself on the eyes, which are now arriving by courier in iced packs from around the US, a deadly eye disorder called Oculosis strikes. Misunderstood, the disease is turning Americans and others all over the world, blind.The only man who can save world sight is Amadeus Kaine. But to do so, the doctor – who’s now on the run with the FBI at his heels – needs an unending supply of fine green eyes to do so. Raiding eye banks in the US (and in Istanbul, where, we learn, there are more green-eyed people than anywhere else on earth), Kaine turns his hand to murder. Hunting green-eyed victims, he kills them, before sucking out their eyes. Later, he finds that the eyes taste even better if he sucks them out of living victims – swallowing them whole like fresh oysters.Amadeus Kaine is eventually caught by his nemesis, the FBI special agent on his trail – but not before he saves the sight of the special agent’s son, who is himself suffering from Oculosis. Interred in a maximum-security jail, Kaine ends up gouging out his own eyes, before swallowing them. They are, curiously, the most immaculate shade of green.".
