- Greek_frigate_Hydra_(F-452) abstract "The Greek Frigate Hydra (F-450) (Greek Φ/Γ Ύδρα) is the lead ship of the Greek Hydra frigate class and flagship of the Hellenic Navy. It is based on the Blohm + Voss MEKO 200 frigate class and was built in its shipyard. Three more vessels were built by Hellenic Shipyards Co. at Skaramangas in following years.Built in the Blohm and Voss shipyards by the order of the Greek Government, the Hydra was the first of four frigates of the MEKO 200 type (the four being HYDRA, SPETSAI, PSARA, and SALAMIS). It was delivered to the Greek Navy on 15 October 1992 and its first Commanding Officer, Commander A. Papahristodoulou HN. It sailed into Greece on 28 January 1993.The Crest of the Frigate Hydra is the same as those of her predecessors. The flag was actually designed as a copy of one of the versions of the flag under which the ships of Hydra sailed under during the 1821 revolution. This Flag, and consequently the crest designed after it, depicts the Cross as a symbol of the nation during the years of struggle. In April 1988, the Greek (or Hellenic) Navy proposed and approved the four Frigates of the MEKO 200 type in an effort to modernize its Fleet after years of struggle that concerned gathering and assessing valuable information and offers. After a large number of negotiations, the following contracts were signed to fulfill this program:a. Contract with ΜΕΚΟ Consortium (MC) composed of BLOHM + VOSS AG and THYSSEN RHEINSTAHL TECHNIC to build the first Frigate in Germany.b. Contract with MC to supply parts to Hellenic Shipyards to build the other three Frigates of the MECO 200 Class in Scaramanga, Greece.".
