- Sati_(practice) abstract "Sati (Devanagari: सती, the feminine of sat "true"; also called suttee) refers to a funeral practice within some Asian communities in which a recently widowed woman immolates herself, typically on her husband's funeral pyre.Without explicit ethical support, but, instead, wholly lacking evidential recognition of the rite's existence from the ancient Vedic Age (c. 1750–500 BCE), literary evidence about the practice appears from the 4th century BCE, while archaeological evidence only appears from the 5th and 6th centuries CE. Initially, the evidence points to an origin of the practice within the warrior aristocracy on the Indian subcontinent, gradually gaining in popularity from the 10th century CE to other groups, becoming generally sanctioned/recommended by theological doctrine around the 12th century CE. With the military expansions outside of Indian subcontinent, the practice has been attested to have been practiced in a number of localities in Southeast Asia, such as at Bali in present-day Indonesia. The practice was outlawed by the British Raj in 1829 within their own territories in India (the collected statistics from their own regions suggesting typically some 500–600 instances of sati per year), followed up by laws in the same directions by the authorities in the princely states of India in the ensuing decades, with a general ban for the whole of India issued by Queen Victoria in 1861. In Nepal, sati was not abolished as legalized practice until 1920. Never having been more than a fairly rare custom in India or other countries, the custom is still today occasionally adhered to, despite a 150 year old ban. One example is a recent case from India in 2008, when 75-year-old Lalmati Verma allegedly jumped onto her husband's funeral pyre. The Indian Sati Prevention Act from 1987 makes it criminal to aiding, abetting, and even only "glorifying" the act of sati, placing upon those who could prevent the act a legal duty to prevent it from happening.".
