He was the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Player of the Year in 1986 when he averaged 22.5 points per game. He set the Aztecs' school record for most points scored in a game (54) against U.S. International University on February 20, 1986. He is the second leading scorer in Aztecs history behind Michael Cage. Watson was a two‑time first‑team all‑Western Athletic Conference selection in both 1985 and 1986. He was also named to the all‑WAC Tournament team in 1985 and 1986. Watson scored 19 points in a 1985 NCAA Tournament loss to UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball.Watson was drafted in the fourth round of the 1986 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets.
