He broke tradition by seeking a second term as Speaker, and since then, it has been customary for speakers to serve multiple terms.Stewart received undergraduate and law degrees from Duke University. A resident of Gastonia and an attorney, Stewart served in the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1967 through 1980 representing the 38th District. He was appointed as the Chairman of the North Carolina State Ports Authority Board of Directors in 2004 by Gov. Mike Easley, and was re-appointed in 2010 by Gov.
