He was 23 years old when he debuted on 6 July 1896, with the Boston Beaneaters. After the 1901 season, he retired from baseball to teach full-time at Columbia University and later at Williams College. He became a prominent educator, eventually serving as president of Massachusetts State College, 1926–27, and the University of New Hampshire from 1927 until his death in Durham, New Hampshire.
