The site was notified in 1990 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.A laneside exposure of the Hastings Beds Group here shows 5 m of the top Ashdown Sand Formation and 0.75 m of the basal Wadhurst Clay Formation. The site isimportant for showing a different fluviatile facies in the top Ashdown beds from thatat Brede (31 km east south east).Coarse sandstone with siliceous pebbles and fossil charcoal fragments fill a channel,which is interpreted as part of a braided river system feeding sediment into the Weald Basin.The whole is overstepped by the Top Ashdown Pebble Bed horizon followed by thesandstones and clays of the Wadhurst Clay Formation interpreted as alake/lagoon shoreface like the sequence at the Brede site.. }
