Ward was born in LaGrange, Georgia. After high school Ward enrolled at Morehouse College in Atlanta and majored in political science. Upon completion of his bachelor's degree in 1949, he enrolled at Atlanta University (later Clark Atlanta University), earning a master's degree in 1950.
