Seymour and the great-uncle of Origen's son Edward W. Seymour.He was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on May 31, 1778. Seymour attended the common schools and graduated from Yale College in 1797. He taught school in Cheshire, Connecticut and pursued legal studies in Litchfield Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1800 and commenced the practice of law in Middlebury, Vermont.From 1800 to 1809, he was postmaster of Middlebury. He was a member of the State executive council from 1809 to 1814; he was the State’s attorney for Addison County from 1810 to 1813 and from 1815 to 1819.In 1821, running as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party, he was elected to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1821, to March 4, 1833. He did not run for re-election, instead running unsuccessfully for Governor of Vermont as a Whig.He was a judge of the probate court from 1847 to 1856. He died in Middlebury, Vermont on November 21, 1857 and is interred in that town's West Cemetery.. }
