As an adult, he engaged in agricultural pursuits. He moved to Griffin, Georgia, in 1865 and continued in farming operations.He engaged in mercantile pursuits and in banking.Freeman was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875). As a congressman, he appointed Henry Ossian Flipper to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Flipper became the first black person to graduate from West Point. After Freeman's term in office, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and again engaged in mercantile pursuits.He died in Atlanta on September 3, 1885, and was interred in Oakland Cemetery.. }
