He studied law and was admitted to the bar, commencing practice in Percivals, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1824 to 1828 and again from 1830 to 1833 and was elected an Anti-Jacksonian to the United States House of Representatives in 1832, serving from 1833 to 1835. Afterwards, Gholson served as a judge of the circuit court for the Brunswick circuit for many years before his death on July 2, 1848 in Brunswick County, Virginia.. }
