He had previously worked as an advocate in private practise and as a judge of the Eastern Cape High Court, Mthatha.Judge Madlanga was born in 1962 at Njijini village, Mount Frere. He was educated at the University of Transkei (BJuris, 1981), Rhodes University (LLB, 1986) and the University of Notre Dame (LLM, 1990). He worked from 1987 to 1989 as a law lecturer at the University of Transkei, and from 1991 to 1996 he practised as an advocate in Mthatha. In 1996 he was appointed to the bench of the Transkei Division of the High Court (now the Mthatha seat of the Eastern Cape Division). In his time on the High Court he also served on the Competition Appeal Court, as acting Judge President of the High Court, and acting terms on the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.In 2001 he resigned from the bench for financial reasons and returned to private practice. He appeared for South Africa at the International Court of Justice in the case regarding the Israeli West Bank barrier, and served as evidence leader at the commission of inquiry into the fitness of Bheki Cele to hold office as national police commissioner, and at the Farlam Commission investigating the Marikana miners' strike.. }
