The "occupation" began with the erection of a number of tents in St. Andrew Square on 14 October 2011. These gardens are located in the heart of Edinburgh and right outside the Global Headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland.The movement was formed on 15 October 2011 to support the aims of the Occupy Movement initiated by the Adbusters and Occupy Wall Street protests of 17 September 2011. The movement focused on corporate greed, centred around the 2008 UK government bailouts, representing very large sums of money, to poorly performing UK banks, plus the big bonuses paid subsequently to senior bank officials of the same banks. Occupy Edinburgh believed the extra costs borne by these groups were strongly linked to what it called "bank greed".On 24 November 2011, Edinburgh City Council became the first governmental body in the world to grant both the Occupy Edinburgh and the worldwide Occupy Movement official recognition.At the end of January 2012 the protesters relocated to The Meadows, a park within Edinburgh, and then left this site a couple of weeks later ahead of a legal bid to have them evicted by the City Council.. }
