He was nominated by President Richard M. Nixon on August 8, 1974, to a seat vacated by Robert E. Tehan. He was confirmed by the Senate on August 22, and received his commission on August 27, 1974. He became chief judge of that court in 1986, and assumed senior status on August 1, 1991. He retired in August 1998 and died later that month in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was survived by his wife Laverne Warren, his six children, and his 12 grandchildren.. }
