The call letters refer to tobacco; and at station breaks in the 1960s and 1970s, the station announced itself as "WTOB in Winston-Salem, the Tobacco Capital of the World". The stations first airdate was in 1947. Orignal WTOB studios were downtown Winston across from Sears And Roebuck Department Store on Fourth Street. WTOB was owned by Southern Broadcasting Company for many years. In the 1950s, WTOB had a sister Television station WTOB-TV Channel 26. However, that station went off the air in the late 1950s. A few years later in 1963, a new T.V. station WGHP (licensed out of High Point, N.C.) was put on the air by Southern Broadcasting. From right around this point, WTOB radio studios were housed at the Thruway Shopping Center on Stratford Road in Winston-Salem. WGHP shared space with WTOB with a Winston news bureau that also aired live news reports from that studio. In the 1980s, WTOB's studios were moved back downtown Winston where there remain today.. }
