In 1892 he was appointed Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic and served as visiting physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, 1887-1908. Fitz was the first to identify appendicitis and prescribe appendectomy. He also did research on the pancreas, discovering that pancreatitis is sometimes a complication of hyperparathyroidism.. }
