Professor Gibson's academic career was somewhat unusual in that he spent nine years as a bank clerk-and four as a construction worker before attending college in his native St. Louis; his interest in geology stemmed from summers during college spent doing field work for the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines. He came to Harvard as a part-time lecturer in geology in 1927; he also lectured until the 1950's at Wellesley College. He became assistant professor in 1931, chairman of the board of tutors in the Division of Geological Sciences in 1934 (until 1941) and associate professor in 1939. He served many years as a member of the Board of Freshmen Advisors, as well. After his retirement from Harvard teaching in 1954 he continued to teach and do field work in South America, Iran and Pakistan and was an advisor to the United States Geological Survey, the Atomic Energy Commission and the United Nations in foreign countries.
