Due to their low coefficient of friction, polymeric composites are very efficient where lubrication is difficult or impossible. At present, the design of these bearings is mainly based on manufacturers' experience. In this article a test setup is presented able to perform large-scale tests on composite bearings. The frictional and wear behaviour of such bearings can be tested under different loading conditions. In the first part of the article, the general design of the setup is described. In the second part, a model for the dynamic behaviour and the calculation of the friction forces is presented. The final part shows the data of the first bearing tested on the setup and the comparison is made between the theoretical model and measured data.. }
