Looking at this practice through the Habermasian lens, one can discern a disproportionately large amount of news originating from the centre of the political system. Also actors belonging to the periphery of that same system get a fair deal of attention; i.e. politicians and (through lobbying) the economic leaders. Individual citizens of the civil society could virtually only gain access through special interest groups; they were otherwise ignored as news sources. Due to the introduction of digital technologies on the internet, citizens have gained the power to address the outer world parallel with the distribution platforms of the traditional news media. Therefore, it seems plausible that traditional media adapt their working routines by including individual citizens as news sources. Our study on this matter uses the data of a large-scale survey sent to all Flemish professional journalists in 2008 in order to assess this shift in sourcing practices.. }
