- 01J35NRG9QP4JJN56WA8S8XH4D abstract "Many reasons lead us to evaluate Mario Bunge’s philosophical work positively. His training as a physicist, added to his genuine philosophical interest, makes him appreciate the value of rigorous mathematical method, and simultaneously prevents him from concentrating on formal issues, forgetting the substantial ones. Few professional philosophers would dare to announce so comprehensive a work as his Treatise on Basic Philosophy, ranging over semantics, ontology, systems theory, epistemology, to ethics, seriously attacking traditional problems by means of modern methods. Yet, why are we philosophers at all if not because some such Treatise on Basic Philosophy is the purpose we are pursuing? We want to show our appreciation for his attitude which we fully share, by concentrating on volume III of his series, namely Ontology I: The Furniture of the World, and asking a series of questions about it. The questions would lead, if they are not mistaken, to a reordering of the material, to a tighter systematization and sometimes to locally different definitions and postulates. But we fully agree with the author that an ontology such as he offers here should be written; we want to take his pioneer effort seriously by looking at it in detail.".
