- 01JG5DYX08DTPFSTHYMH0CS6CM abstract "Music, no doubt, is a universal language and it plays an important role in most societies. Individuals listen to music and enjoy same through the language(s) in which they understand it. This study shall examine the relevance of languages used by African musicians; its effects on the society as well as lessons learnt by listeners of such genres vis-a-vis Fela Anikulapo Kuti's Afrobeat. A linguistic approach to Fela Kuti’s music leaves so much to be desired. He may be referred to as a linguist who played on words and sentences to suit his musical lexicon. Fela, as a matter of fact, adopted English -Pidgin -Yoruba in virtually all his works. He used all these languages intermittently while he code-mixed at will, in order for his message to be understood by all and sundry. His code-mixing may, at times, comprise Yoruba, English and / or Pidgin depending on the level of education of his target audience. To this effect, this paper concerns itself with African Music and African Languages with a particular focus on Fela Anikulapo Kuti's works. It shall also take a cursory look at the origin and forms of Afrobeat as emanated from diverse cultures and societies.".
