After pastoring churches in New York and Richmond, Virginia, he moved to Racine, Wisconsin, where he started a temperance magazine. He was supervisor of the public schools in Racine 1849-1853 and in 1855 was appointed Superintendent of Public Instruction of Wisconsin serving until 1858.
