After spending a lot of time in the reserves the following season, Blumfield played only one senior match in 1945, the Semi Final win over Collingwood, but he wasn't selected for the subsequent Grand Final. The uncle of Justin Blumfield, he could then only manage three VFL appearances in 1946 and left for Prahran. Blumfield then re-emerged as a field umpire and officiated in 37 VFL matches from 1951 to 1954.He died at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne, on 20 September 2011 at 89 years of age.. }
