There are beautiful sculptures present all over the temple and the temple itself dates back to 13th Century. The temple and its pond with flight of steps and mandapam in middle of the pond adds beauty to the village. The legend goes by the way that, daily a cow moved away from its herd, prayed and offered its milk under a vilvam tree and this lead the villagers to dig the place and to their surprise they found a shiva statue in linga form, who is now the presiding deity in the temple. Hence the name for the village, "pasu" meaning "cow" and "vanthanai" meaning "pray" in Tamil. The annual Chitirai festival, which falls during the tamil month of Chithirai (mid April to mid May) draws people from in and around the district.The annual festival of Arulmigu Sri Pathirakali Amman temple draws the villagers who have migrated to distant cities like chennai, madurai for work.. }
