From 1972-1996 he was the Director of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, and from 1996-1999 he was President of the New England Conservatory. From 1999-2006 he held the position of Dean of the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. He currently remains at the UTA as a professor of musicology.
