He is the great-great-grandnephew of long-time U.S. Senator Zachariah Chandler of Michigan.Rod Chandler received a B.S. from Oregon State University and a M.Ed. from the University of Nevada.Chandler, a former television newscaster and recovered alcoholic, was elected to the Washington House of Representatives in 1974, where he served until 1982, and was elected as a Republican to the 98th Congress, where he represented the newly created 8th congressional district from January 3, 1983 to January 3, 1993, when he gave up his seat for an unsuccessful candidacy for the United States Senate. Chandler seemed to have the upper hand in the debate until for some unknown reason he quoted the Roger Miller song "Dang Me." He was further damaged by the unpopularity of President George H.W.
