The school was founded as a girls' school in 1897 by Margaret Isabella Gardiner, whose ambition was 'to make a school where girls are treated like sensible creatures'. By September 1902 the present site of the school had been purchased and the first four boarding houses and teaching block completed. In 1910 the Gardiner Hall, Library, and Clough House were built. The school accommodates babies and toddlers in the Dragon's Nursery, and children up to the age of 18 in the Sixth Form. The school offers boarding throughout the term, weekly, or 'flexi' boarding.
