- Freeway_(software) abstract "Freeway (originally Uniqorn) is a WYSIWYG web design application for Mac OS X (older versions also run under Mac OS 9), developed by the English company Softpress Systems. There are two flavours of Freeway: Pro and Express, both currently at version 6. Freeway Express has fewer features and is aimed more at the amateur web designer.Freeway is based on a pre-Mac OS X print publishing application called Uniqorn, also developed by Softpress, but discontinued when Apple stopped supporting QuickDraw GX in Mac OS 8.The philosophy behind Freeway is that an average user is able to design websites without having to deal with any code, using an interface very similar to that of Desktop publishing applications like QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign. Advanced procedures (like connecting to a MySQL database using a scripting language like PHP) are done through plug-ins called "Actions". Several Actions can be downloaded for free on several websites, but there are also commercial 3rd Party Actions, like the "Auction Seller Suite" from FreewayActions.com, which allows the creation of Ebay-friendly HTML within the Freeway design interface. Many useful Actions are bundled with Freeway, the latest set from Softpress being a suite of Actions that lets the user create a shopping cart through the popular Mals e-commerce system.Unlike most other WYSIWYG web design applications, Freeway produces syntactically valid HTML code and Cascading Style Sheets, making it usable in situations where valid HTML code is obligatory. For example, valid code is required by law on the majority of federal and state institutions' web sites in Germany. Versions of Freeway from 4.4 onwards also create HTML and CSS that correct many rendering problems with Internet Explorer 6 on Windows.New in Freeway 6: HTML5 and CSS3 headline the extensive list of features. Freeway Pro sites now have the option to output HTML5 (in HTML or XHTML syntax) and Freeway Express sites are now always created using HTML5. Added support for HTML5 video and audio to both Pro and Express, with the option to add multiple sources and Flash fallback (video only) for maximum browser compatibility. Freeway Pro users will enjoy improved form items, including search fields, email fields, and placeholder text; and named (semantic) section elements, such as article, nav, header, and footer. Modernized code and external stylesheets, stylable and improved form items and automatic form handling. Both Pro and Express users will benefit from the new CSS3 additions, text shadow and item shadow, while Pro users have the added ability to set item opacity. More CSS3 features (rounded corners for example) will be added to future updates of 6 as browser support improves. Both Pro and Express users can now easily provide a way for visitors to leave comments on their sites. Whether users are creating a blog, an online shop, or a community site, allowing visitors to leave comments is important. This feature uses the Disqus service to allow users to add multiple comment blocks to sites, and even display the same comment blocks over multiple pages.Master pages and items have had a complete overhaul with more options available, like adding back master items and Actions, automatically relinking content that’s identical to its master, inflow items as master items, and a completely reworked reapply master feature. Inflow CSS layouts have been drastically improved. Many more layouts are possible in Freeway Pro using new positioning and sizing options. Users can exploit the full benefits and power of master pages like never before. Google Maps have been reworked to use the latest code from Google with faster load times, mobile support, and no API key. Softpress Systems has also added the ability for Pro users to add multiple markers to their map.".
