He served as a regular apprenticeship from a grindstone boy to a foreman. In 1857, he commenced business on his own account, first building several yachts and pilot boats, including the Charles H. Marshall.In 1859, he located himself at Greenpoint. He built the Hu Quang, the Che Kiang and the Foh Kein (which was at the time the fastest boat in China waters) in the China trade. In 1865, he launched the Arizona for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.".
