At the age of nine his family immigrated to Sonoma County, California where he grew up in a migrant labor camp and worked as a farmworker. After attending public schools and serving as his high school student body president, he graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School in 1972 and 1975 respectively. In 1994, Hugo Morales became the first resident of the San Joaquin Valley to be a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.In 1976, Mr. Morales and an all-volunteer staff of farmworkers, teachers, students and artists founded Radio Bilingüe, which, on July 4, 1980, began broadcasting over the entire San Joaquin Valley. At the time, Mr. Morales was an adjunct professor of La Raza Studies at California State University, Fresno. Ever since then, Mr. Morales has been Executive Director of Radio Bilingüe and a pioneer and advocate for bilingual and minority-controlled public media throughout the country.In 1999, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting honored him with the Edward R. Murrow Award, public radio's highest distinction. Mr. Morales received the 2006 Cultural Freedom Prize from the Lannan Foundation, established “to recognize people whose extraordinary and courageous work celebrates the human right to freedom of imagination, inquiry, and expression.” Hugo Morales’ work has been featured in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Parade Magazine, The Fresno Bee, The Washington Post, The Dallas Morning News, Harvard Alumni Magazine, Harvard Law Bulletin, NBC's Today Show, and the PBS Latino series Heritage. He has been honored by the Association of Mexican-American Educators with The Cesar Chavez Leadership award; the Alliance for Public Technology with the Susan G. Hadden Pioneer Award for ensuring equitable access to information for the Spanish-speaking population in the U.S and Mexico; and the Hispanic Link Journalism Foundation as Communicator of the Year for opening doors in the field of communications. In 1999, Mr. Morales received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from California State University, Fresno, and in 2011 Mr. Morales received an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from California State University, Sacramento. In 2012, he was appointed by Governor Brown to the California State University Board of Trustees.Mr. Morales has served on many educational, philanthropic and community boards. From 1998 to 2004 he served as a member of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation commission. From 2003 to 2011, he served on the California Postsecondary Education Commission (CPEC), advising the Governor and the state legislature on policy.Mr. Morales’ board memberships include The California Endowment, The San Francisco Foundation, The Rosenberg Foundation, The UC Merced Foundation, the California Postsecondary Education Commission, the Fresno First Five Children and Families Commission, and the Latino Public Radio Consortium. Past board tenures have include the Alliance for California Tradition Arts, Central California Legal Services and California Tomorrow.".
